Shorter College announces speaker for December Commencement
Congressman Nathan Deal, U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 10th District, will be the featured speaker at Shorter College’s 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. commencement exercises on Saturday, Dec. 9. Both ceremonies will be held in the college’s Winthrop-King Centre.
Congressman Deal serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee as chairman of the Subcommittee on Health. In this role he oversees legislation and hearings for critical issues in America’s health sector including the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The recipient of the Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Guardian of Seniors Rights Award from the 60 Plus Association, he has also been named Legislator of the Year by numerous organizations.
A 1964 graduate of Mercer University and 1966 graduate of Mercer Law School, Congressman Deal served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. Following a career in the public legal system and private law, he was elected to Congress in 1992. He also has served as a Georgia state senator, a Hall County juvenile court judge, and as assistant district attorney for the Northeastern Judicial Circuit of Georgia.
An estimated 202 students receiving the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science in Education, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, the Master of Business Administration, and the Master of Arts will take part in the 10 a.m. ceremony. The 2 p.m. ceremony will include approximately 212 students receiving the Associate of Science in Business and Bachelor of Science in Management degrees.
