Gonzales named Mid-South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week
After a remarkable performance in Shorter College’s win over Brevard College on Sept. 2, Lukas Gonzales has been named the Mid-South Conference Week 2 Special Teams Player of the Week.
In the 39-7 win over the Tornadoes, the Shorter Hawks utilized the talent of Gonzales for five punts totaling 227 yards, averaging 45.5 yards, with a long punt of 55 yards. He scored a total of seven points on the day, getting four extra points and one field goal from 27 yards.
“In all my years of coaching, I don’t think I have ever had a punter quite like Lukas,” said Head Coach Phil Jones. “He had a remarkable day on Saturday and is a huge factor in the course of our game.”
Gonzales, a graduate of Model High School, received Mid-South Conference Honorable Mention at the close of last year’s season.
Despite the honor of Player of the Week, Gonzales remains humble and critical of his weekend performance. “It’s a great feeling to be honored, but I always feel there is room for improvement,” said Gonzales. “I see the missed field goal and know I need to get those things right. This was only the first game, and we have to remain focused on the rest to make sure we keep improving and keep winning.”
