SPRING 2009

School of Nursing's facility and curriculum taking shape

A whirlwind of activity is taking place at the future home of Shorter’s School of Nursing. The mountains of paper and stacks of academic textbooks testify that Dean of Nursing Vanice Roberts and her staff have been busy. “We are basically building a customized curriculum from scratch,” said Dr. Roberts, speaking about the nursing program that will kick off in the fall of 2010.

Recruitment of potential nursing students is under way. “The admissions staff is looking at high school students that have expressed an interest in nursing, but our biggest priority right now is making sure that we get the word out that Shorter now has a nursing program,” she said.

The overall goal for the School of Nursing at Shorter College is to develop a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program of distinction that is committed to academic excellence and spiritual integrity while reaching out to both the local and global community through healthcare service.

“This year and next will be busy ones as nursing students join other Shorter College students in core classes,” said Dr. Roberts. “We will be advising potential students, finalizing nursing policies, delineating the admission criteria, developing the courses that will make up the curriculum, designing classrooms and learning laboratories, and submitting progress reports to the Georgia Board of Nursing.”

Also on the agenda is establishing the facility (at right) that will house the school. The School of Nursing will be located in Rome’s Riverbend shopping center, inside the Coosa Medical Clinic building. Workers are currently transforming the space into classrooms, specialized learning laboratories and office space for faculty.

“There’s a huge demand for nurses right now, and there are practically waiting lines for other schools. We want to make sure that students interested in nursing know Shorter’s nursing program is accessible to them,” Dr. Roberts said.

In February 2008, Shorter announced its plans to make application to the state nursing board for approval to offer the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Plans call for the inclusion of a medical missions experience in the curriculum, which will have Shorter students serving needy populations both domestically and abroad.
