SPRING 2009

Minister, Music minister of year honored

Minister of the Year

In recognition of outstanding service to the Kingdom of Christ, Dr. Alan Hix (’82) was named Shorter College’s 2008 Minister of the Year. The award recognizes his work as a pastor and Christian educator in both Louisiana and Georgia. Dr. Hix currently serves as department chairman and professor of religion at Shorter.

Outside of the classroom, Dr. Hix devotes his teaching and writing to strengthening the local church. Working with the Leadership Ministries Division of the Georgia Baptist Convention, he developed a curriculum for the Priority in Preaching Conferences and serves as a lead presenter in those conferences, working to equip and encourage pastors in their preaching ministries

At Shorter, Dr. Hix’s contributions extend beyond the classroom as well. He enjoys providing ministry-based experiences, including leading the 2008 mission trip to Canada, and is opening new doors of discovery as he leads Shorter students to take part in an archaeological excavation in Israel this summer.

First Baptist in Gainesville licensed Dr. Hix into the ministry in 1980 and ordained him in 1982. In addition to his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Shorter, Dr. Hix holds the Master of Divinity and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in biblical studies from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He has completed graduate students in archaeology through NOBTS and through the University of South Florida.

Dr. Hix is married to the former Kathy Kelly (’79). They have one daughter, Kelly.

Music Minister of the Year

This year, Shorter’s annual Minister of the Year honor was extended into the realm of ministry through music. Receiving the first-ever Music Minister of the Year Award was the Rev. Larry Mize (’82), who serves as associate pastor and minister of music at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Snellville. The Rev. Mize has served at Mount Zion since 1985, and his duties include planning, coordinating and directing all worship services and special programs. He also works with the pastor to choose appropriate video clips, drama sketches, and other materials to enhance worship and reinforce the messages.

Having accepted Christ at age 14 at a crusade held at Barron Stadium in Rome, he was licensed to the ministry at Beverly Hills Baptist in Fort Worth, Texas, and was ordained at Mount Zion Baptist in Snellville.

He previously served as minister of music and youth at Beverly Hills Baptist and as minister of music, youth and children at Pleasant Valley North Baptist in Rome. In addition to his Bachelor of Church Music degree from Shorter, he holds a Master of Divinity degree from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Joining the Rev. Mize in his service to the Lord is his wife, the former Pamela Rae Swann (’82). They have two children: Meredith, a 2006 graduate of Shorter, and Christopher, a senior at Georgia Tech.
