FALL 2008

COVER STORY

Going Global

The astronauts on the Apollo 8 mission left Earth with very specific goals. While they completed the tasks assigned and helped pave the way for the lunar landing, the defining moment of their journey came as the orbiter rounded the Moon and the astronauts saw this earthrise.

Earthrise as seen from the Apollo

In a post-mission interview, astronaut and photographer Bill Anders said that they went on the mission to learn about the Moon but that they really learned lessons about the Earth and about themselves.

Such defining moments are an important part of the educational process and a primary goal of Shorter’s commitment to providing global experiences for each student. Though these may take the form of a study-abroad excursion, a Chorale tour or a mission trip, one fact remains the same: students return home never seeing that home or themselves in quite the same way.
