October 2010 - November and December are busy months for Shorter’s School of Fine and Performing Arts. Fall operas, fall musicals and concerts by the Shorter Chorus and Shorter Chorale are just a few of the dozens of spectacular events we have lined up for you this season. Check out a complete list of arts events by scrolling through our online calendar.
DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that longtime music professors William and Mary Ann Knight were recently honored at a reception held at the Coosa Country Club? The pair were recognized for their 87 years of combined service to Shorter and celebrated for their most recent achievement – being named the 2010 National Teachers of the Year by the Music Teachers National Association. Former students and faculty, family and friends were in attendance at the special event.

SU NEWS
Have you told us what you are thankful for at Shorter? If you haven’t, make sure you let us know! We want to include those comments in our upcoming Virtually Shorter Thanksgiving edition. Just send us an email at amadden@shorter.edu or contact us on Facebook. At Shorter, we are thankful for great alumni like you!
In fact, we extended a big “thank you” to five alumni just a few weeks ago during our Homecoming celebration. Dr. Kyle Carney (’01), Bob (’72) and Beverly (’75) Harris and Charles (’71) and Lee (’73) Hight were presented with distingushed alumni awards during our annual alumni association meeting. Shorter was also given a great gift during homecoming – a $309,000 check from the 2009-2010 alumni gifts campaign!
We also honored Derek Spain (’93) as our Minister of the Year. Derek and his family live in New York State where Derek serves as pastor of Lake Placid Baptist Church. Derek also served as an Olympic chaplain at the 2010 Winter Games. He returned to the campus just a few weeks ago and ministered to students during chapel service.
And speaking of winter, it’s that time of year again! Christmas is just around the corner and what better way to stuff a stocking than with the gift of music. The Shorter Chorale’s latest CD, Beautiful River, can be purchased for $15 by calling Gina Hicks, administrative assistant to the dean of the Shorter University School of Fine and Performing Arts at 706-233-7247 or contact her via email at ghicks@shorter.edu.
