Shorter College Prepares to Begin Construction of 48-Bed Residence Hall
| Shorter College announced on March 15 that it had signed a contract with Pinson’s Inc. of Rome to construct a new residence hall on the college’s Rome campus. The three-story apartment-style building will provide living space for an additional 48 students, according to Shorter College President Harold E. Newman. “The residence hall construction project is a symbol of the positive growth of Shorter College. In the fall of 2006, we had 1,046 students enrolled in our traditional programs, which filled our existing residence halls to capacity. This new construction will allow us to be prepared for the 1,100 students we anticipate for Fall 2007,” Dr. Newman said.
The new residence hall will be located behind the Sheffield-Thompson building and west of Roberts Hall. Construction is expected to begin immediately with a target date for completion set at Aug. 15, 2007.
Follow the Construction

March 27 – Crews working with Pinson's Inc. of Rome do site preparation for the
construction of a new 48-bed residence hall.

April 11 — Site preparation is complete, and crews have poured the footings
and have all of the steel in place to pour the pad.

April 18 - With the pad in place, work has begun on the framing of exterior walls.
The first wall was built this morning, and, as the photo shows, the framing is
progressing quickly. The contractor projects that the framing of each story will
take approximately a day and a half, if there are no weather delays.

April 20 - The residence hall is beginning to take shape as workers
have completed framing the first floor.

April 23 - Framing of the residence hall continues as workers have
nearly completed the shell of the second story.

April 25 - The third floor framing is nearly complete, and the roof trusses
are expected to be delivered soon.
April 27 - A crane begins setting the roof trusses in place.

May 2 - While the exterior framing is nearing completion, work crews are busy inside.
The plumbing is being installed, and most of the bathtubs are in place.
Both the electrical and air conditioning work has been roughed in.
Windows and shingles are expected to be delivered next week.
May 7 - Work crews continue inside. The windows should arrive today.
The shingles will also be put on later this week.

May 10 - Windows are being added to each floor.

May 16 – The installation of windows and the construction of the roof – complete with shingles – are complete. Work continues inside as the electrical, heating and air conditioning system, and sprinkler system are being roughed in. The brick masons began their preparatory work today, and their progress should quickly become evident.

May 24 - Brick masons are hard at work outside, while inside crews continue roughing in the electrical wiring, heating and air conditioning system, sprinkler system, plumbing and phone wiring. After inspections next week, crews can begin to hang sheet rock.

May 30 - Brick work continues. Sheet rock has arrived and will be hung once inspections end on Monday. Work continues approximately two weeks ahead of schedule.

June 6 - Because the dry, sunny weather continues in Northwest Georgia, brick masons have been able to steadily progress with the exterior of the new dorm.

June 19 - The brick exterior is 50 percent complete. Inside, insulation was installed after passing inspections. Crews are now hanging sheet rock.

June 27 - The bricking of the exterior is now two-thirds complete. Inside, workers are nearly finished hanging sheet rock. After taping out and sanding, crews will begin hanging kitchen cabinets and painting.

July 5 - Crews have finished hanging sheet rock. A specialized flooring will be poured tomorrow to act as a sound barrier and fire retardant.

July 11 - Crews are currently installing door frames, and power is being run to the building.

July 18 - Crews are 50 percent complete with painting the interior rooms, and construction remains on schedule. Additionally, parking grading will begin next week.

August 1 - Crews have finished painting the interior rooms, and carpet is 50 percent complete. Additionally, appliances are expected to arrive soon.

August 8 - Crews have finished the carpet, and all of the appliances have been installed. An inspection will be planned in the near future to grant the certificate of occupancy.

August 16 - The new student apartment building's parking lot is now taking shape. Asphalt is being poured today, and the lot will be striped over the weekend. Additionally, furniture
is expected to arrive today. Progress continues towards the building's ribbon-cutting
ceremony scheduled for Monday, Aug. 20, at 2 p.m.

August 20 - Shorter College officially opened its new student apartment building with a ribbon cutting ceremony held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20.
Taking part in the ribbon cutting, were (left to right): Dr. Debra Faust, vice president of student affairs and dean of students; Carrie Fitzsimmons, a Shorter College senior who serves as president of the Student Government Association; the Rev. Allen Hill, director of the Education Commission of the Georgia Baptist Convention; Dr. Nelson L. Price, chairman of the Shorter College Board of Trustees; Dr. Harold E.
