88-Year-Old Grad Becoming America’s Favorite ‘Pop’

Horace Sheffield is a name you may have heard on your local radio and news station or your favorite morning news program. He is quickly becoming America’s favorite “Pop”!

At age 88, Rev. Sheffield completed his bachelor’s degree here at Shorter University through our Online Programs and is officially a part of our Class of 2017. He made his way across the graduation stage with the aid of his walker to the sounds of thunderous applause from the crowd that rose to its feet to honor him. The graduates and families that gathered knew they’d witnessed something special, and it doesn’t take long when you talk to Rev. Sheffield to figure out that he deserves every ounce of attention he is getting!

Old photos from Rev. Horace Sheffield's younger days in school. His story has been picked up by the newspapers in his hometown of Barnesville and here in Rome, by Atlanta television and radio stations, and by ABC, CNN, and countless other media outlets across the U.S. and even as far away as Nigeria and Kenya. The likes and shares his story has garnered count in the tens of thousands, if not more.

The retired Baptist pastor proudly exclaims that he is the “4th oldest in the United States to graduate with an undergraduate degree.” Horace was originally inspired to go back and finish his degree when he saw an article in a magazine about senior citizens pursuing their degree. He later was told that Shorter University had an Online Program where he could complete his degree 100% online! This was a game changer for Rev. Sheffield as transportation can be a problem for him.

Today, Rev. Sheffield teaches the College and Career Sunday School class at his church and is elated to know that he is inspiring others to pursue their education. Rev. Sheffield stated, “If I did it at 88, anybody can do it! I encourage everybody to get as much education as they can as early as they can. Don’t wait!”

It goes without saying that we are so proud of Rev. Sheffield. We are proud to have him as part of our Shorter University Alumni family and we are even more proud of the legacy he is leaving and the way he is positively affecting those around him through this testimony and through Christ.
